English 8

Students practiced their critical thinking and presentation skills throughout a research project, exploring the contributions of prominent Black individuals in Canada's history. Students were asked to become experts on their topic, using only images within their visual presentations, to deepen their knowledge and understanding. The class was required to choose the category they felt their individual best matched: Challenge, Dream, or Speak. Then, a bulletin board display was made demonstrating these three categories, with everyone's name and picture displayed under each one. Finally, each presentation was shared with the rest of the school population via QR code that could be easily scanned in the hallway by anyone who wished to know more about a select individual. The students in English 8 were keen and engaged throughout the project, taking opportunities to share newly acquired findings and observations with their teachers and peers as they performed their research. They seem to have a new appreciation for the obstacles faced by Black communities in Canada, as well as the resilience it has taken to overcome them.
