N̓səl̓xčin Language Block

At Salmo Secondary School this year, we have an exciting new program. Cara McGuire will be teaching a N̓səl̓xčin language block. N̓səl̓xčin is the language spoken by the Syilx People.

Last year, Cara was part of a SD8 cohort that was learning N̓səl̓xčin language at Selkirk College. The group of SD8 teachers also, as part of the program, visited the Salish School of Spokane and attended the Celebrating Salish Conference also in Spokane. Cara has brought her learning back to Salmo and will be teaching our students some of what she learned over the past year.

Cara's lessons will reflect the curriculum of the class she is working with. For example, the Art class will be learning the names of the colours while the Math class will be learning numbers. We are very excited for the this opportunity and seek to have it reflect our commitment to the Calls to Action.
