Salmo Secondary Students Heading to Selkirk!

The SD8 Youth Explore Trades Sampler program is an academy style program designed to provide students in grades 10-12 with an opportunity to sample various trades prior to graduation as part of the Trades Training Program pathway. With ten weeks of  hands-on learning, students are well-positioned to further their education and training in Trades Training or Youth Work in Trades programs. There are no tuition fees associated with the Youth Explore Trades Sampler program.

The program is run over the course of the second semester and is co-located at the school site and Selkirk College’s Silverking Campus in Nelson.  Salmo students receive twelve dual course credits toward graduation and must have a Three-Year Graduation Plan in place prior to admission. Opportunities to ladder into Trades Training Foundation programs and Youth Work in Trades Apprenticeship program are possibilities to extend the Trades Training program pathway into a career opportunity.

Students will experience the following trades: carpentry, electrical, metal fabrication, millwright, machinist, welding, and heavy-duty mechanics. Note that this may be subject to change depending on availability.

Any Salmo Secondary students or families interested in knowing more should contact the school.
