SD8 School Leadership Changes for Upcoming School Year

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) announced today that the following school principal and vice-principal transfers, appointments and retirements will come into effect August 1, 2023:  

District-Wide

Principal Ken Wiens is leaving Erickson Elementary to take on the role of district principal for SD8’s online learning programs including Elev8 DESK – a Provincial Online Learning School (POLS) - and the hybrid online/in-person program, Homelinks. Principal Wiens will take over from District Principal Rob Simpson who is retiring in 2023.

Ski and Snowboard Team Thrives in Community

- A huge thanks to Salmo!

The Salmo Secondary Ski and Snowboard team competed at the East/West Kootenay Zone Championships in Golden BC on Feb 8th to 10th. The Boys' Snowboard team placed 3rd overall and qualified for the B.C. Highschool Provincial Skiing and Snowboarding Championships at Sun Peaks Resort north of Kamloops that was held February 27 through March 1.

Anti-racism and Cultural Safety

In late January, Salmo Secondary hosted the District Anti-Racism and Cultural Safety working group. Salmo Secondary was very well represented with students Nassali Mugerwa and Violet Bronaugh providing the perspective of students at Salmo Secondary.

Salmo Secondary Hosts Cross-Country Championships

On Oct 26th, Salmo Secondary hosted the Kootenay Zone Cross Country Championships. This was a first for Salmo Secondary who had never hosted the Zone Champs. The meet was used as a provincial qualifier for the B.C. Championships to be held in Victoria on Nov 5, 2022. 

Custom shed build: The follow up crew

Ms. Marrandino's Senior shop students built a custom 4'x16' shed to house the schools gardening supplies. The shed includes double doors and a shingle roof. In addition to the build, students also ventured into an electrical unit where they learned how to wire a receptical, switch, and light with a planned goal to install this into the structure. In meeting with the students to discuss this project they spoke of the research that they neeeded to put in before beginning, and the importance of following a plan.

Scavenger Hunt

P.E. 9 had a Village challenge this past week where they searched for clues in a scavenger hunt. It was a fun filled class where the learning was taken outside. 

Our Teepee is back up!

Yesterday, our school teepee was raised again with support from Jesse Halton. Students and staff who elected to take part worked collaboratively, gained knowledge, and opened space for questions. Coming into the school this morning was all the more welcoming, as students and staff were greeted to the site of our school's Teepee! A big thank you to Ms. Marrandino for organizing and launching this outdoor classroom. Protocols for use will be shared with staff and students before teachers can elect to use this space for instruction. 

Elderberries: Learning and Harvest

In English 12, our learners have been exploring different aspects of collective identity. We have looked at how cultural stories and having shared experiences create this aspect of identity. This week we gathered elderberries together, took some time to snuggle bunnies and turned all our berries into elderberry syrup.
